Title: 14k gold award medal for handicap singles in tennis, won by Fred W. Houston Author: Shreve & Co., San Francisco Place: San Francisco Publisher: Shreve & Co. Date: 1921 Description: Original 14k gold metal won by Fred W. Houston on July 31, 1921, for the handicap singles event, held by the Berkeley Tennis Club, engraved on the back, and with embossed tennis player vignette with laurel leaves on the front. Metal measures 3.1 cm. in diameter, plus chain loop on top, housed inside the original Shreve & Company gilt-tooled white leather box with closing lid, interior lined in white velvet and with Shreve & Co.'s imprint (1" tall, 3½" wide, and 1¾" deep). Interesting piece of tennis and San Francisco Bay Area sports memorabilia. The Berkeley Tennis Club is located at 1 Tunnel Road found next to the Claremont Hotel, in Oakland, California, but originally was founded in Berkeley in 1906. In 1917 the Berkeley Tennis Club moved to its present location. Historically, the Berkeley Tennis Club is associated with William C. ("Pop") Fuller, who served as an unofficial coach for the junior members, and among his protégés were Helen Wills Moody and Helen Jacobs who both played at Wimbledon. Other great players were once members of this historic club, including: Hazel Hotchkiss (Wightman), winner of 43 national championships and a member of the National Lawn Tennis Hall of Fame and Thomas Bundy (captain of the 1914 Davis Cup).
