Patrick Allan was born in Arborath, Scotland, and turned away from his father's cloth merchant business in favor of an artistic career. He studied in Edinburgh, Rome, and Paris, settling finally in London. In 1843 he married Elizabeth Fraser Baker, last of the Frasers of Hospitalfield, later adopting his wife's family name. Restoring his wife's land holdings and finances, he combined successful estate management with his career as an artist, transforming Hospitalfield into one the earliest significant Scottish Arts & Crafts Movement buildings.
