Nine Makoto Yabe (Japanese/American, 1947-2005) Studio Pottery Bowls, Massachusetts, late 20th century, all with artist's incised mark, low bowl with crimped edges, dia. 7, bowl with irregular rim, ht. 2 3/4, tea bowl with crimped edges, dia. 2 1/4, porcelain tea bowl with metallic glazes, dia. 7, porcelain tea bowl with mottled brown glaze, dia. 5 1/4, porcelain tea bowl with rose and blue glazes, dia. 7, tea bowl with brown metallic glazes, dia. 6 3/4, porcelain tea bowl with matte metallic glaze, dia. 6 1/4, porcelain tea bowl with gray and black abstract designs, dia. 6 1/4 in. Note: Yabe's work exemplifies the transmission of Japanese ceramics to the West. He immigrated to Boston, where he was an integral member of the local ceramic community, yet he maintained his Japanese roots. Yabe taught ceramics at a number of schools and universities in the Boston area, touching the lives of all his students and expanding their knowledge and appreciation of studio ceramics.
