Gelatin silver print, 9 5/8 x 7 1/2 in. (24.4 x 19.1 cm),framed. Condition: Mounted to paperboard, good. Provenance: Private collection within the artist's family; by 2012, sold to the current private collector. N.B. Edward Weston's iconic 1936 photograph Nude (Charis, Santa Monica), is a fine example of the interplay between light and shadow that has defined much of his photographic career. Here Charis, his partner and future wife, quietly poses in a sundrenched doorway with her arms wrapped around her legs. Weston's sculptural use of light creates a photograph where the form of the body directs the composition.
