Walker Evans (American, 1903-1975) Gothic House, Salem, Massachusetts, 1932. Inscribed "Salem" u.l. on the verso. Gelatin silver print, 4 1/8 x 6 1/8 in. (10.5 x 15.6),unmatted, unframed. Condition: Mounted to paperboard, wear and soiling to mount, subtle yellowing. N.B. In the early 1930s, Walker Evans worked with Lincoln Kirstein – writer, collector, and curator – to create illustrations for a publication on 19th-century architecture, and he made several photographs of Victorian houses in the Boston area. While the book was never completed, an exhibition was organized for the Museum of Modern Art, New York, in 1933 and traveled to 14 additional venues. The format and mounting of these prints suggest that they were made for this exhibition and a print of this photograph is in the collection of MoMA.
