Two Civil War Union Letters Relating to the Battles of Fair Oaks and Seven Pines, James B. Onderdonk, Seven Pines, 8 June 1862, four-page autograph letter with original envelope, he writes the letter on behalf of a sick soldier who is too ill to write himself, he also notes that the bodies of Confederate soldiers are still on the battlefield, many left unburied and others who are just barely covered with dirt and still have their head or feet sticking out, 7 1/2 x 5 3/4 in.; Robert H. Cokely, Fair Oak, 18 June 1862, five-page autograph letter, he received orders to reinforce Casey's division, but got stuck in the mud of the Chickahominy and missed much of the action, he speaks of working through the night to move a cannon out of the mud, across the river, and into position to fire the next morning, he concludes by describing walking the battlefield the following morning and "awful site there was the dead and wounded piled up like slaughtered hogs," 8 x 5 in.
