Two-page letter on single leaf, to Sam Houston, requesting a military commission for his eldest son Richard noting that he was previously unable to secure entrance to West Point and that he did not feel it proper to seek that assistance of his friend General [Andrew] Jackson as he was then "enduring much physical infirmity and nearly on the brink of the grave," Houston replies on reverse writing that Chotard was "one of the most brave and accomplished officers of his day," stamped on reverse, (old folds with tears along fold lines, repairs, toning),10 x 8 in.
