Manner of Frans Hals (Dutch, 1582-1666) Portrait of a Woman with Clasped Hands, Holding Gloves, Three-quarter Length Unsigned, identified as "Portrait/Frans Hals" and lent by "Mrs. Wm. Chester Chase" on a fragmentary label on the stretcher. Oil on canvas, 45 x 31 in. (114.3 x 78.7 cm),framed. Condition: Lined onto a rigid surface, retouch, fine craquelure. N.B. The pose of this Dutch-style female figure with clasped hands and holding gloves has several precedents in the 17th century, including portraits by Frans Hals Thomas de Keyser and Cornelis Jonson van Ceulen. However the execution of this work points to an artist of the 19th or early 20th century. A fragmentary label on the stretcher indicates that the painting was once owned by Adelaide Cole Chase (American, 1868-1944),who, as "Mrs. William Chester Chase" of 95 Beacon Street, loaned it for an unspecified purpose. Research has not determined who the copyist may have been.
