Dutch School, 17th Century The Finding of Moses Unsigned. Oil on panel, 19 x 24 5/8 in. (48.5 x 62.5 cm),framed. Condition: Fine craquelure overall, areas of varnish inconsistency and discoloration, panel with hairline horizontal crack, surface grime. N.B. The Finding of Moses was a very popular subject in 17th-century painting. Here we have a classicized version of the Biblical scene. The Italianate landscape is punctuated by an obelisk at the center and a Dutch-style still life to the right. Costuming is also 17th century, with an exotic plumed sunshade held aloft beside the Pharoah's daughter. Much of the detail and activity in the background are currently lost in the discolored varnish. The painting at hand was reviewed via digital images by experts from the RKD (Netherlands Institute for Art History) who determined that it was most likely a work from an artist in the northern Netherlands during the first half of the 17th century.
