1. Photograph, cabinet size albumen print, 4 by 6 inches laid down to slightly larger mount, of Gen. Joseph K. Barnes in uniform, some wear to surface, penciled notations to recto and verso of mount. Ostendorf notes on the verso that this print dates from 1868 and originates from the Brady-Hanby Collection. 2. Photograph, albumen print stereograph, each image 2 3 /4 by 3 1 /8 inches, mounted in a pair on 7 by 3 1 /4 inch board, of Barnes and his staff, [Washington], [1865], some wear and spotting to surface, mount lightly soiled, penciled notations to recto and verso. Together with carbon of Ostendorf's 1951 letter to the Surgeon General asking for help identifying the members of Barnes' staff, and a response from the Army Medical Hospital providing the names and positions of each man pictured. Present also is an 1881 newspaper clipping recounting Barnes' recollections of the night of Lincoln's assassination. As Surgeon General, Barnes was in charge of the medical crew attending the mortally wounded President. It was he made the declaration of death at 7:21 a.m. April 15, 1865.
